Technical Notes

A web browser (mozilla firefox) is used as the kiosk display and navigation environment. We used Firefox in fullscreen mode, and the new VLC plugin for video. The kiosk computer was part of a wireless LAN (local network) that also included 4 other computers, those in the apartments, and a laptop running Ubuntu as the webserver. Windows was used on the client computers since it was universally available on these machines. Arduino boards connected to these computers and the kiosk computer were used for the electrical switching, using simple opto-isolated relays.
